Hey there. I had acne horribly as a teen. Let me tell you. ^^ Now first you msut understand that acne starts as an internal problem - the pimples are just a symptom of a greater problem. You need to eat healthily - don't eat too few calories or nutrients or too many as both have hazardous effects on the skin thus resulting in inflamed unhappy skin.

Now my suggestion is to eat foods rich in antioxidants which are naturally good for you and your skin. Green tea, white tea, and water are excellent choices along with raw fruits and vegetables. Next you should be taking a vitamin supplement. There's this formula at Walgreens called "Nature's Cure" for men and women - it has these pills which are homeopathic herbal supplements (aka vitamin tablets.) The box is about 10$ or less and it comes with a cream. I'd chunck the cream.

Seriosuly, all those topical acne products do nothing for the skin other than dry it out and aggrevate it. Serisouly. A good skin regimen is a cleanser specific to your skin type, a toner and a moisturizer. Use in that order at a maximum of twice a day. Now my suggestions on products would be the Almay line as it's color coded by skin type and is a full system. Although it can be a tad over priced for drugstore brand stuff.

Also use a gentle chemical peel once a week ( a scrub is too rough for acne prone skin and can cause other problems and make acne worse) such as Olay Thermal Scrub which isn't a scrub at all. Heh.

It has a mild amount of glycolic acid (this stuff will lightly slough off dead skin - dead skin is major cause of acne as the oils produced by the skin mix with the dead skin creating this bacteria infested almost "cheese" known as sebum or smegma in the pore) so look for stuff with glycolic acid to help your skin renew it's self.

If you have body acne then might I suggest the same regimen but a little tougher products? Also make sure your towels are always clean when you bathe or shower and that your clothes including your bra are always fresh and clean each time you wear them. Also wash your bedding every two days and alternate between headphones or use earbuds. One more suggestion is to either chunk foundation entirely or use just a loose powder with a large fluffy brush. You should soak your makeup tools in an alchohol and water solution once a week to kill bacteria.

The things that I have listed are the most common reasons for acne to occur and I hope that you'll take these steps towards healthier skin and I promise if you follow what I've outlined here you're problem will be solved. =d

Dr Schultz, but don't certain active ingredients like chemical exfoliants need to work at a certain pH levels in order to be fully effective? Shouldn't you wait about 20 minutes before applying the next active ingredient? Please let me know, thanks!!

@nepheliad Yes chemical exfoliants need to be at a certain pH in order to be effective, but BP alone does not affect pH at all. It's the base that the BP is in, which is typically water (which has a pH of 7) and some silicones, that affect the pH. So you're partially right, but mostly wrong. Nevertheless, you should wait around 15-30 minutes for the chemical exfoliant to begin absorbing into your epidermis before you apply another product.

Doc, I understand that you like to keep these videos short but I think you should have mentioned how some active ingredients can 'inactivate' other active ingredients... I believe thats a whole video in itself though

There seems to be some debate between the use of Vitamin C and Copper Peptide.... can you use these two products at the same time (i.e. apply one right after the other?)... some people are arguing that Vitamin C and Copper Peptide will neutralize eachother out... please confirm! :)
